Worldwide enterprise networks provide excellent connectivity inside the local area network (LAN), but typically have much lower bandwidth on the wide area network (WAN) that connects locations to each other and to central data centers. To overcome WAN capacity limitations and reach everyone across the enterprise, an enterprise content delivery network is typically required. Traditionally, companies have tried to deploy more hardware (in the form of caching appliances in every office) in an attempt to shift the traffic load from the WAN to the LAN, but this is costly to deploy and maintain; and, it takes several months and sometimes years to implement. Some companies attempt to multicast-enable their enterprise network, but that does not address on demand video needs, is very expensive, fraught with risk and often leads to mixed results.
